Russia will “press for inter-Syrian dialogue,” Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told a council debate on the Middle East on Wednesday.
“To further this we are ready to give the opposition and the government a platform in Moscow to forge contacts to unify the opposition and for negotiations with the government,” he added.
Churkin also criticized the United States and European countries for seeking to increase pressure on Assad outside of the UN Security Council.
The West action “leads to a worsening escalation of the confrontation,” and western nations “will likely bear the burden of responsibility for the likely catastrophic consequences of such acts,” Churkin added.
On July 19, Russia and China vetoed a Western-backed UN Security Council draft resolution against Syria, which called for new sanctions against the Syrian government under Chapter VII of the UN Charter
.
It was the third time that the two world powers block an anti-Damascus resolution since the beginning of unrest in Syria.
The US, Britain, France and Germany have said they will seek action against the Syrian government outside the UN Security Council
.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011, with demonstrations being held both against and in support of President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
The Syrian government says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the unrest and deadly violence while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.
Damascus also says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country and the security forces have been given clear instructions not to harm civilians.
