Russia raps unilateral Iran sanctions

Russia has been and will continue to oppose unilateral sanctions against Iran, including the European Union’s decision to impose an oil ban against Tehran which will take effect on July 1, Ryabkov said on Friday.

He also urged the EU and the United States to restrain from imposing such sanctions “on the whole.”

Ryabkov’s remarks echoed earlier comments made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a press conference with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi in Tehran on June 13.

“Our stance regarding unilateral sanctions is clear. We are opposed to any unilateral sanctions,” Lavrov said.

“Unilateral sanctions by others will never have a positive and constructive outcome,” he added.

Lavrov made the comment ahead of scheduled talks between Iran and the P5+1 group — the US, Britain, Russia, France, and China plus Germany — in Moscow on June 18 and 19.

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear program. Based on the allegation, the US and the EU have imposed financial and oil sanctions against Iran to pile up pressure on the country to stop its nuclear energy program.

On January 23, the EU agreed to ban oil imports as well as petroleum products from Iran and freeze the assets of the Central Bank of Iran across the EU.

Last month, the US Senate approved a bill to extend sanctions against countries or companies that have dealings with the National Iranian Oil Company and the National Iranian Tanker Company, another attempt to restrict Iran from selling its crude oil abroad.

Iran’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Shamseddin Hosseini said on May 20 that oil prices will soar to as high as $160 per barrel if EU sanctions against the Islamic Republic take effect.

Iran has strongly refuted the US-led allegations that Tehran may be pursuing a military approach in its nuclear program, arguing that as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has every right to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

In addition, the IAEA has conducted countless inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities but has never pointed to any evidence of a diversion towards weaponization of its program.
