Raising concerns about human rights issues in the UK, Konstantin Dolgov, Russian Foreign Ministry’s commissoner on human rights, democracy, and supremacy of law, slammed the British government for encroachments upon the rights of immigrants, torture of terrorism suspects, and phone-tapping.
“The situation with human rights in the UK is characterized by considerable manifestations of racism and xenophobia and encroachments on the rights of Christians,” said Dolgov in the State Duma on May 14.
“We are hoping that the British administration will address the concerns expressed by human rights organizations in connection with serious problems in a fully serious and responsible manner.”
Earlier this month, Russia condemned the British Foreign and Commonwealth report on human rights in Russia for not being “impartial and open minded” and lacking in objectivity due to it being based on sources of questionable credibility.
According to the document entitled “The Human Rights and Democracy: The 2011 Foreign and Commonwealth Report,” which was published on April 30 by the UK Foreign Office, human rights issues including abuses in the North Caucasus, journalists’ security and women and minority rights remain a top priority in Russian-British bilateral relations.
