Russia, Japan still divided on islands

“It is very sad that 67 years after (World War Two) the territorial issue is still not resolved,” Japan’s Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba told reporters after talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Saturday.

Lavrov rejected Japanese criticism over visits by Russian officials to the disputed Kuril Islands claimed by both countries.

“We cannot accept the protests that have been heard from Tokyo about this,” Lavrov said. “Russian authorities are responsible for improving the socioeconomic situation in this part of the Russian Federation and we will continue to do this.”

The disagreement comes weeks before Russia hosts a summit of Asian states.

The dispute surrounds the southernmost four islands in the Pacific Ocean, which are still claimed by Tokyo and collectively known in Japan as the Northern Territories.

Russia and Japan have long been at odds over the sovereignty of the islands, which has blocked a peace treaty between the two countries since the end of World War II.
