Russia Grounds Su-27 Fleet after Jet Crashed Near Moscow

nsnbc : The Russian Air Force grounded its fleet of Su-27 fighters after a jet of this type crashed near Moscow Thursday morning. The pilot who did not manage to eject in time was killed in the crash.

SU-27_RussiaThe Russian Defense Ministry reports that all flights of Su-27 aircraft have been suspended until investigators have found the causes of the fatal crash near the Russian capital. The Su-27 fell out of the sky and crashed into a wooded area in the Pushkinsky district in the Moscow. Nobody on the ground was injured.

The so-called “black box” of the jet has reportedly been recovered in good condition. The warplane was part of the Russian Knights aerobatic team. The team had reportedly participated in part of the opening ceremony for a monument to aviators in Ashnukino.

The Defense Ministry noted that the Sukhoi Su-27 may have crashed due to technical problems. However, it will be the inquiry that will have to determine the cause of the crash.

Until then, or until further notice, the fleet of Su-27s will remain grounded. The Defense Ministry noted that the pilot failed to eject in time while he as doing everything he could to steer the plane away from a nearby residential community.
