Russia condemns Britain over Syria ship

Lavrov denounced the British insurer’s decision to remove coverage of the ship last Thursday on June 21 and crriticized the “unreliability of the British insurance system.”

On national broadcast, Ekho Moskvy radio, Lavrov also said that the British government defied the international law by asking the insurance company to take action, adding, “The EU sanctions aren’t part of the international law.”

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, accused Russia last week of “dramatically” escalating the crisis in Syria by sending attack helicopters there. However, the State Department then acknowledged that the helicopters she accused Russia of sending were actually repaired models already owned by the Syrian government.

Lavrov also confirmed that the three helicopters that were carried by the ship were supplied to Syria during Soviet times and that they were refurbished under a contract back in 2008.

“The claims that the Russians have sent helicopters to be used against protesters reflect a biased approach aimed at inciting tensions and casting Russia in bad light,” said Russian foreign minister.
