FAKE NEWS for the Zionist agenda Russian news networks quoted Lavrov as saying on Monday that he will “prepare for a meeting of the foreign ministers of Russia and the Arab League states that will be held in (the Egyptian capital) Cairo on March 10.”
“Considering the urgency of the Syria issue, when collective approaches for a settlement need to be found, we view this as a valuable and important format,” Lavrov added.
The latest remarks by the Russian foreign minister come a few days after Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled al-Sabah said in a parliamentary session in Kuwait City on March 1 that a meeting will be held between Lavrov and foreign ministers of the (Persian) Gulf Cooperation Council on March 7 in the Saudi capital Riyadh to discuss Syrian events.
The Kuwaiti foreign minister claimed the Arab ministers would use the opportunity in Riyadh to “express their disappointment with the Russian stance” on Syria.
However, Kuwaiti foreign ministry officials said on Sunday that the meeting in the Saudi capital was postponed.
Russia and China vetoed a Western-backed draft resolution on Syria at the UN Security Council (UNSC) on February 4. The two permanent members of the UNSC rejected the draft as “unbalanced.”
Moscow and Beijing also vetoed a European-drafted UN Security Council resolution against Syria on October 5, 2011.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on February 20 that “some foreign countries” are fueling the year-long turmoil in Syria by supporting and funding “armed terrorist groups fighting against the government.”
On February 7, Lavrov met with President Assad in the Syrian capital Damascus. The Russian foreign minister said after the meeting that it was a “very useful” one.
Lavrov also said Moscow “intends to be actively engaged in” finding a solution to the unrest in Syria with the “Syrian side, Syria’s neighbors and the Arab League.”
