Rupert Murdoch Has a Lot to Learn About Twitter

Less than 48 hours on the Twitters and the octogenarian Dow Jones emperor already got himself into social media trouble, sending a hypocritical message that earned him his very own hashtag. Joining Twitter on December 31 as the verified @rupertmurdoch, perhaps Rupert Murdoch‘s New Year’s resolution involved building his personal and professional brands. At least that’s how his two-days old feed reads, as he has bumbled on about accolades from the Wall Street Journal and Fox — things he owns. But, like many a tweeter, Rupert got too comfortable with the medium, when he criticized the British for taking too many holidays … while on a holiday vacation of his own.

Storyful’s Felim McMahon caught the tweet, which Murdoch has since deleted.

Since Murdoch sent this from the comfort of a Caribbean vacation, as McMahon notes, this comes off as pretty hypocritical. On New Year’s Eve, Murdoch’s third tweet was “Great time in sea with young daughters, uboating,” he wrote. He added two tweets later, “Vacations great time for thinking. St Barth’s too many people. Thoughts best kept private around here. Like London!” Or like Twitter! Like any regretful tweeter, Murdoch deleted the offensive remark, but not before the Twitterverse retweeted it. And what Murdoch intended as damage control only fueled the @rupertmurodch hate, producing an anti-Murdoch hashtag #murdochsdeletedtweets.

This is just one of the many lessons Murdoch has to learn about his social media career. When such a high profile name, who once called the Internet the home of “porn, thievery and hackers,” joins Twitter, he will be judged. Only following 4 people, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey included, Murdoch is nearly up to 50,000 followers — and that’s over a holiday weekend. Other than his vacation snafu, Murdoch has mostly stuck to raving about things he owns. Example one:

He also threw in some political commentary, basically endorsing GOP candidate Rick Santorum. “Good to see santorum surging in Iowa. Regardless of policies, all debates showed principles, consistency and humility like no other,” he wrote.

He seems to have learned something, tweeting at Larry Page “I’m getting killed for fooling around here and friends frightened what I may really say!” But let’s give praise where praise is due: Murdoch’s goofy webcam profile is perfect for Twitter.
