KEVIN Rudd has already begun a vote-buying pre-election spending spree, with an announcement today of a $100 million jobs and growth package for Tasmania.

Mr Rudd made the announcement today in Launceston, in the marginal seat of Bass, and said the Apple Isle was vital to the nation’s economic future.

“Tassie is part of our economic future,” Mr Rudd said.

“I believe that this state can have a first-class economic future.

Mr Rudd will spend the morning in Tasmania – seen as key to the looming election – before heading to South Australia later today and Western Australia on Friday.

More big dollar spending announcements could be on the cards.

But uncertainty still remains over when the election will be held, with
Mr Rudd indicating on radio yesterday it could be as late as November
.

There was speculation that the PM could go to visit the Governor-General Quentin Bryce as early as this weekend to call an August 31 poll, however sources have told News Corp Australia this is now very unlikely.

If Mr Rudd does not call an election for the end of August it is likely he will hold off until mid-September at the earliest so he can attend the G20 Leader’s summit in Russia in the first week of September.

In Tasmania, Mr Rudd also talked up the benefits of the NBN and other Labor-led initiatives.

He said the National Broadband Network would also help grow the state.

“What that means is you can enjoy living in this beautiful state and be connected to the world and the nation,” Mr Rudd said.

Mr Rudd also took aim at Tony Abbott who he said would “have three huge tornadoes” aimed at Tasmania.

He said the Opposition Leader would rip GST revenue from the state, dismantle the NBN and refuse to back the $380 million investment in schools under the Better Schools Plan.
