The ABC reports that events leading to Kevin Rudd’s ouster in 2010 were set in train two weeks earlier.

KEVIN Rudd’s supporters say Julia Gillard is just one more mistake away from facing a possible leadership showdown.

But they concede that Mr Rudd does not have enough votes to win a ballot if it were held now.

Despite some Labor MPs saying they were “undecided” about the leadership, Ms Gillard’s backers insist she still has the numbers and a return to Mr Rudd would be seen as a party with a leadership “revolving door”.

Leadership tensions moved up a notch in Labor ranks after the Prime Minister’s appearance on ABC TV’s Four Corners program on Monday night.

It was not just her critics who expressed despair about the interview, with some supporters questioning why the PM agreed to be part of a program about Mr Rudd being the “Comeback Kid”.

One of Mr Rudd’s supporters said the Four Corners interview was “another brick in the wall” against the PM and she was “kicking own goals” by reviving the June 2010 coup.

“Is it a tipping point … an awful lot of people are walking around shaking their heads about her poor judgment.”

Ms Gillard said the ABC said the program would be about the Government’s progress since 2007 and its future. “My job is to answer questions and to explain what the Government is doing. I’m not someone who runs away from questions,” she said.

Despite trying to keep her focus on jobs and the economy, Ms Gillard faced more questions about the leadership coup 19 months ago, especially the revelation that one of her staff was writing the “victory speech” two weeks before it happened.

Ms Gillard said the speech was written as a contingency by a staff member, believed to be former adviser John Whelan.

“This was a tense few days for me and the government, so I can’t specifically say to you when I came to know about the speech.”

Ms Gillard confirmed colleagues “canvassed” the leadership with her in the “short days” before she launched the challenge. But she insisted she made up her mind only on the day.

Last night Channel 9 reported that Ms Gillard had used secret ALP polling to lobby colleagues to dump Mr Rudd.

Meanwhile, ABC’s 7.30 program broadcast fresh footage of the Australia Day Aboriginal tent embassy protest that contradicted claims by ACT union official Kim Sattler.

It showed Aboriginal activist Barbara Shaw being told by Ms Sattler: “Abbott’s just made a statement to the press and said the tent embassy should be pulled down.”
