LABOR has a great record of achievement in western Sydney and there’s nothing unusual about Julia Gillard’s pending sojourn in Rooty Hill, former prime minister Kevin Rudd says.

Ms Gillard will be checking into a local hotel next week as she and her cabinet team make a pitch for votes in some of Australia’s most marginal seats.

Shadow treasurer Joe Hockey has described the trip as part of a Labor “con job”.

But Mr Rudd says there’s nothing wrong with “selling the message of what you’ve done in the community”.

He told the Seven Network this morning it was a good thing Ms Gillard was touring an area where the party had a record of “doing physical stuff”.

“We have a physical record of achievement. It’s the hospitals and the schools and the national broadband network,” he said.

Mr Hockey said the trip was just a ploy to cosy up to voters in what is being touted as a key battleground in September’s federal election.

“If the government’s doing a great job, why is the prime minister moving the government out there claiming to be governing from western Sydney when she’s actually campaigning,” Mr Hockey said.
