Royals bill Aussie tax payers for gifts

The Queen and royal family have billed Australian taxpayers for the cost of gifts handed out during their official visits.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard was among 40 dignitaries who received framed photos and other royal memorabilia worth $15,000 from the Queen and Prince Phillip during their visit in October last year, the Herald Sun reports.

The practice of passing costs “to the realms” has been in use for decades and Australian taxpayers have previously footed the $350,000 travel bill for Prince Charles’ 2005 tour and $600,000 for his 1994 visit.

The Queen’s tour of Australia last year is estimated to have cost tax payers about $1 million.

These costs include flights, accommodation, phone calls as well as smaller expenses such as meals and hotel mini-bar fees.

Australian Republican Movement chairman Michael Keating said the costs were small when compared with what the government spends every year “but if people are unhappy about these quite bizarre costs, if we want to stop kowtowing and giving these funnily-funded gifts, we want to get to the real issue which is becoming a republic”.

However, Australians for Constitutional Monarchy chairman Professor David Flint said the Queen should not be expected to pay these bills herself and a future president of an Australian republic would not be expected to pay either.
