Romney wins Washington caucuses

With almost 58 percent of votes counted, Romney was well ahead of his rivals Rick Santorum and Ron Paul who managed to get 24 percent of the votes. Former US House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich got 11 percent.

Romney’s victory came following two primary triumphs over Santorum earlier in the week in Michigan and Arizona and a narrow win over Paul in Maine caucuses earlier in February.

The victory means that Washington state’s voters “do not want a Washington insider in the White House. They want a conservative businessman who understands the private sector and knows how to get the federal government out of the way so that the economy can once again grow vigorously, “said the victorious frontrunner in a statement Saturday night.

Romney and Santorum are seeking to harness momentum in the run-up to Super Tuesday contests when 10 states will select their favored Republican nominee to challenge incumbent Democratic President Barack Obama in November’s election.

Similar to his former speeches, Romney slammed Obama’s policy of Afghanistan war, vowing to bring US troops home “as soon as humanly possible – as soon as that mission is complete.”

In the US, a president is not elected directly by the people, but by the Electoral College. This means a candidate may be elected even despite losing the popular vote.
