I have tried to reflect “the splendor and magnificence of the Persian Gulf” in the symphony and depict its unique beauties and underwater life.
The US-based Iranian composer had earlier said that the foreigners’ attempts to distort the name of the Persian Gulf had provoked him into composing the symphony, which he believes would become ‘eternal’ in the history of Iranian music.
While historical documents show that the waterway has always been referred to as the ‘Persian Gulf,’ certain Arab states have mounted efforts to remove ‘Persian’ from the name of the waterway.
Iran has designated April 30 as the national Persian Gulf Day to highlight the fact that the waterway has been referred to by historians and ancient texts as ‘Persian’ since the Achaemenid Empire was established in what is now modern day Iran.
National Persian Gulf Day marks the anniversary of the expulsion of Portuguese military forces from the Strait of Hormoz in 1622, during the reign of Safavid king Shah Abbas I (1587-1629).
Shahdad Rohani led the Tehran Symphony Orchestra as the guest conductor during the 26th Fajr International Music Festival from February 21 to 27, 2011.
Rohani also accompanied the orchestra in a series of concerts at the Vahdat Hall in May and June of 2010.
His Persian Gulf concert will be held from May 2 to 4 at Tehran’s Vahdat Hall.
