Mr Tsvangirai has previously said some of the country’s military chiefs have told him they will not allow anyone but President Mugabe to rule, regardless of who wins an election.
Most recently, Major General Martin Chedondo, the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Chief of Staff, reportedly urged the military to accept no other party than Zanu PF.
Former trade unionist Mr Tsvangirai, 60, said this week’s publishing of a new draft constitution, which limits presidential terms in office to 10 years and provides for some compensation for dispossessed white farmers, was a “progressive step” along with the suspension by the European Union of sanctions on all but Mr Mugabe and a handful of his allies.
“We need to open a new chapter,” he said. “That’s why I say revenge should not be on the agenda. There should be reconciliation, rebuilding and reconstruction. That should be the future direction.”
