Robert Mugabe as ‘fit as a fiddle’ as he vows to hold elections this year

“We want elections, we wanted them yesterday, we want them today, we want
them any day but others are saying no, no, no, we can’t have elections.

“I will exercise my presidential powers in accordance with the main
principal law, the constitution of our country, and announce when the
election will take place.”

Veteran Zimbabwe political analyst Brian Raftopoulos said threats of elections
this year were serious:

“Elections would throw Zimbabwe into a very perilous situation.”
said Mr Raftopoulos, who added that he fears elections without political
reforms would leave Zanu PF free to again inflict violence against Movement
for Democratic Change supporters.

For the last three years Mr Mugabe has shared power with Mr Tsvangirai who
beat him in violent elections in 2008.

In a conciliatory tone, Mr Mugabe conceded that Mr Tsvangirai’s MDC party is
no longer an “enemy’ but a political “opponent.”

“We may differ politically, religiously even ethnically. Differ in
various other ways but at the end of the day we are all Zimbabweans and that
is what counts much more than anything else.”

Jacob Zuma, the South African president, who mediates the Zimbabwe crisis for
the regional group, the Southern African Development Community, stopped Mr
Mugabe from holding elections last year and is scheduled to go to Harare
next month.

Mr Mugabe’s officials said he would celebrate his birthday at a family dinner
at his home in Harare and will attend a large Zanu PF party in eastern
Zimbabwe on Saturday.
