Roadside bomb injures Afghan official

The incident took place at around 3:30 p.m. local time (1100 GMT) on Thursday in the provincial capital Kunduz, located 250 kilometers (155 miles) north of the country’s capital Kabul, when a remote-control bomb went off as the vehicle carrying the head of Kunduz Provincial Council Mawlawi Khosh Mohammad was passing by.

Law enforcement forces cordoned off the area after the incident, and shifted the injured to a local hospital to receive treatment.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and an investigation into the incident is underway.

Roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are by far the most lethal weapon Taliban militants use against Afghan forces, foreign troops, and civilians.

The homemade explosives accounted for half of the about 1,500 civilian deaths in the first six months of last year, according to the United Nations.

Insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan despite the presence of some 130,000 US-led forces in the war-torn country.

The United Nations announced on February 4 that 2011 was the deadliest on record for Afghan civilians. The death toll rose eight percent compared to the year before and was roughly double the figure for 2007.
