Roadside blast kills five Afghan civilians

The incident took place on Saturday evening in the Zhari district of Afghanistan’s Kandahar Province, when a civiian vehicle came into contact with the explosive device.

At least one child was reportedly among the victims.

Although no group has claimed responsibility, local officials blame the Taliban for the attack.

The US-led invasion of Afghanistan took place in 2001. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan, despite the presence of some 130,000 US-led troops there.

Thousands of civilians, including women and children, have been killed as a result of the war.

Similar attacks carried out by militants have claimed many civilian lives both in Afghanistan and in Pakistan’s border regions.
