One of Melbourne’s busiest freeways had to be shut down briefly while an enraged motorist armed with a tyre lever repeatedly smashed other vehicles.
The 41-year-old had been involved in a minor car crash in the Burnley Tunnel tollway on Saturday afternoon, triggering the violent road rage attack, police say.
“He was just walking around … smashing any random car,” witness Shanen Ma told the Nine Network.
Police say the man took off on foot across the freeway and dove into the chilly waters of the Yarra River when officers tried to arrest him.
Two officers eventually jumped in the water and pulled him ashore, but then had to take him to hospital for mild hypothermia.
The tollway was reopened a short time later.
No one was injured during the incident and the man will be interviewed at a later time.
