Rio+20: Cuts in bills for UK poor as access to water declared a human right

“We’ve already announced tough new measures to see gas and electric bills fall
by up to £100 a year. This will see struggling families save more.

“Water companies can now begin to consult their customers on how to ensure the
most vulnerable households receive extra support.”

It is expected the water companies will pay for the social tariffs through
richer customers’ bills, but Defra insisted it will be a minimal cost as
customers will also be given help with efficiency and companies are expected
to cut costs through saving energy themselves.
