A Victorian secretary who stole more than $338,000 from mining giant Rio Tinto to buy first class airline tickets, fancy dinners and concert tickets for family and friends has been jailed for a minimum 18 months.
As a senior secretary Kylie Thompson, 34, of Sunbury, was responsible for booking company flights and accommodation and ordering taxis and couriers as well as general administrative duties.
She had access to a corporate credit card and over a period of five years, used it to steal $338,901.67 from Rio Tinto in 375 fraudulent transactions, until anomalies were detected in August 2010.
Thompson pleaded guilty to six charges of obtaining property by deception and five charges of obtaining financial advantage by deception.
In the Victorian County Court on Friday, Judge Wendy Wilmoth said Thompson went undetected for years by disguising expenses for her own private enjoyment as fictitious expenses for flights and accommodation attributed to her colleagues.
She used the money to pay for dinners at fancy restaurants, first class flights and accommodation as well as entertainment and concert tickets for family and friends who were none the wiser.
“Your actions were a gross breach of the high level of trust placed in you, committed over a long period of time and others must know that such behaviour will be firmly denounced by the courts,” said Judge Wilmoth.
The court heard Thompson’s offending escalated after she allegedly experienced sexual harassment from a manager, although she only reported the harassment to management after her employment was terminated.
The alleged harassment is currently under police investigation.
Thompson was sentenced to three-and-a-half years’ jail, with a non-parole period of 18 months.
She has already paid back Rio Tinto $102,000 and was ordered to repay the remainder of what she stole.
