Revamp for tourism in South Australia

South Australia’s top tourism body will be revamped to cut costs and make more of tourism opportunities.

Chief executive Ian Darbyshire has been sacked from the South Australian Tourism Commission, and his replacement, Jane Jeffreys, will work part-time for the next 12 months.

Tourism Minister Gail Gago said she had called for savings of $1.2 million as required by the government’s mid-year budget review.

She said the overhaul was not a reflection of Mr Darbyshire’s performance and was driven by the need to improve efficiencies and bring about cost savings.

“I would like to thank the outgoing chief executive for his hard work and commitment to the tourism sector in South Australia, and I wish him well in his future endeavours,” she said.

But the changes came after a series of problems in the tourism sector including the operation of Adelaide’s main tourist visitor centre.

A private company took over the centre last year but handed it back to the government after about six months, saying it was under financial stress and could not meet its obligations.

Ms Gago said the state government wanted to reassure tourism operators that it remained committed to supporting and promoting the industry.
