Retailer in Brazil finds innovative use for Facebook ‘likes’

Clothing retailer CA has found an innovative use for Facebook ‘likes,’ placing real-time information about the number of ‘likes’ each item receives on the hangers of various garments throughout retail locations in Brazil.

The idea behind the scheme is to provide customers with further information on the product and its popularity by displaying data on how many other people think that it is a good purchasing decision.

However some trend-watching and social media sites such as Venturebeat.com and theverge.com are skeptical as to how useful this information actually is, noting that personal factors such as fit and taste are far more likely to influence decisions than the number of Facebook ‘likes’.

For those that do base their clothing purchases on how popular the items are with other Facebook users, apps such as Glimpse could help.

Once Facebook users have enabled the Glimpse app it shows a Pinterest-style mosaic of images of items and brands based upon their Facebook popularity and your history of likes.
