Kevin Rudd says he’s doing the responsible thing by supporting Prime Minister Julia Gillard amid “policy challenges”.
“I really enjoy being foreign minister and I think the responsible course of action for ministers of the government, particularly governments facing real policy challenges, is to support the prime minister,” he told reporters in Brisbane on Friday.
He made the comment after a Galaxy Poll found almost seven out of 10 voters believe Mr Rudd was Labor’s best chance of hanging onto power.
“People are very kind but I am very happy being foreign minister,” he said.
Asked if he’d rule out a leadership challenge, he said: “As I have said on multiple occasions, I’m very happy being foreign minister”.
“I support the prime minister and I also believe the prime minister will lead us to the next election.”
He said leadership speculation was not distracting him.
“I’ve been around in politics long enough to know this question comes and goes,” he said.
“I manage to work a pretty healthy day not thinking about any of this stuff …”
