A major resources company has abandoned plans for a coal terminal in central Queensland.

The newly merged Glencore-Xstrata group has been developing plans for a coal terminal on Balaclava Island at the mouth of the Fitzroy River, near Rockhampton.

However, the company says it will cease work immediately on the project.

It is blaming poor market conditions in the coal industry, excess port capacity in Queensland and shipping limitations.

Glencore-Xstrata says the Queensland Government will need to ensure its long-term ports strategy provides for the growth of coal export capacity, as demand from Asia increases.

Conservationists have been critical of the Balaclava Island project, warning it could cause significant damage to the fragile Fitzroy delta ecosystem.
