Residents warned of fire near Carnarvon

West Australian authorities have warned that a fast-moving bushfire north of Carnarvon is out of control and posing a threat to properties.

The Department of Environment and Conservation says the blaze is moving rapidly in a northwesterly direction towards the North West Coastal Highway.

It has urged residents near the highway north of Carnarvon to Minilya Roadhouse, west to Mardarthuna Homestead and east to the coast to be prepared.

The blaze was 35 kilometres away from the highway late Sunday, but may cross the highway during the night, the department said.

Strong southeasterly and easterly winds are forecast during the night and all of Monday and there is a threat to lives and homes, it said.

The fire is generating a large amount of smoke and spreading ash several kilometres to its front.

People in the path of the fire need to leave or get ready to actively defend, the department said.

Motorists have been warned the North West Coastal Highway will be closed for the next 24 to 48 hours between Carnarvon and Minilya.
