According to an Indian official, 90 people have been rescued, while 19 bodies have been recovered so far, CNN reported on Wednesday.
The official said that the chances of finding more survivors were currently slim as the fast-flowing river might have washed away the bodies.
Survivors said, although, about 350 tickets had been issued to adults, there were many children aboard the ferry without tickets when the Monday afternoon tragedy occurred during a cyclonic storm.
India has also sought help from neighboring Bangladesh in recovering the bodies as the site of the tragedy is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) away from the latter country.
The ferry was bound for the Fakirganj village in the Assam state when it capsized near the riverside town of Dhubri.
In 2010, at least 79 people died when an overcrowded boat sank in the eastern India state of West Bengal.
