Republicans set to ramp up campaign

The newly crowned head of Australia’s Republic Movement (ARM) has signalled his intention to ramp up a campaign for full national independence during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

But former diplomat and political adviser David Morris said Australians must decide the timing of any divorce from the British royal family.

“I’m absolutely convinced that Australians are very proud and very confident of their nation and will want this country to be fully independent,” Mr Morris told AAP on Sunday.

The 47-year-old, who has been appointed the ARM’s new national director, says the lobby group will ramp up its activities from mid-2012 – just as Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond jubilee celebrations begin.

It follows a period in Australia where the republican debate has been quietened, if not silenced, by successful recent visits by the Queen and Prince William.

Prince Charles is understood to be planning a visit to Australia after September.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said in August that the Queen’s death, whenever that occurs, would be an appropriate time for Australia to sever formal ties with the UK.

But Mr Morris said the Australian people should be fully in control of the timing and nature of any changeover.

“It’s something that the Australian people should discuss and not have foisted upon them by either an external event or by political leaders,” he added.

“It’s something the community should decide.”

The public should also decide who becomes head of state and what title they use, Mr Morris said.

“It’s really about the Governor-General’s role … if that position was created as the head of state position then you could call it whatever you like,” he added.

“People might want to call it governor general, they might want to call it president, we might come up with our own indigenous title.

“But the person who has that role should be Australian.”

A series of UK government reports obtained by AAP in December revealed that the UK Foreign Office believed the Queen’s visit last October and Prince William’s tour in January 2010 bolstered support for the royal family in Australia.

But the reports, compiled in September and November 2011, revealed belief within the UK Foreign Office that an Australian republic was a “natural development” in time.

It remains to be seen how the Queen’s diamond jubilee, due to be celebrated in June with a series of high-profile events, affects sentiment in Australia.

Mr Morris agreed the issue had been off the agenda for some time.
