Republican Romney wins 5 key US states

The voting for Republican primaries in the five states was held on Tuesday.

The five states have a total of 231 delegates and victories in these states will place him closer to the 1,144 delegate-vote required to officially win the Republican nomination.

“To all of the thousands of good and decent Americans I’ve met who want nothing more than a better chance, a fighting chance, to all of you, I have a simple message. Hold on a little longer. A better America begins tonight,” said Romney, who spoke from New Hampshire, where he formally launched his campaign in June.

Romney has recently sharpened his attacks on Obama.

“Because he (President Barack Obama) has failed, he will run a campaign of diversions, distractions and distortions. That kind of campaign may have worked at another place and in a different time – but not here and not now,” Romney further said.

Romney’s chances for nomination by the Republican Party grew higher on April 10 when his main rival, Rick Santorum, announced the suspension of his campaign.

The American president is not elected by the people’s direct votes to the candidates.

In the US presidential election, citizens cast ballots for a slate of members of the Electoral College. These electors in turn elect the president. The final result is based on adding together the number of the votes in every state.
