The Obama Campaign has reportedly disabled credit card verification on its website, allowing the campaign to accept donations from anywhere in the world. This could facilitate the breach of a federal law which “prohibits foreign contributions and requires the disclosure of identifying information for contributions in excess of $200.”
The Address Verification System (AVS) requires the three digit security code on the credit card to prevent credit card fraud. It was reported that AVS was also turned off by the Obama Campaign during the 2008 election.
A political activist Adrian Murray claimed on Facebook that he was able to donate $3 on barackobama.com as “Adolph Hitler” using a bogus German address, listing occupation as “Dictator” and employer as “Nazi Party”.
Others claimed to make donations under the names of noted, real and fictitious criminals including, “Nidal Hasan”, “Don Corleone”, “Saddam Hussein” and “Osama bin Laden”.
The Romney and Santorum campaign websites require the security code and “will not accept donations unless the security code and payment information match up.”
