Remaining Libyan Chemical Weapons Shipped to Germany

nsnbc : Libya’s remaining stockpile of chemical weapons and precursor chemicals were shipped out of the country to Germany by Danish ships on Tuesday, said Libyan Deputy Prime Minister Musa al-Koni.

The resolution authorized UN member states to transfer and destroy Libya’s chemical weapons. On August 19 the Danish parliament officially decided to lead a maritime operation to remove Libyan chemical weapons to Germany. Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Kristian Jensen said:

“We will undertake a leading role in an important operation to remove the remainder of Libya’s chemical stockpile, which otherwise risks falling into the wrong hands” .

The remaining chemical weapons were part of the Libyan military’s stockpile. The Libyan government under the murdered Head of State Muammar Qaddafi began the process of decommissioning the chemical weapons stockpile ten years ago. However, some of these weapons were used against the Libyan military and government controlled areas by “rebels” in 2011.

Libya_Chemical weapons precursor chemicals_2016Following the de-facto war on Libya by NATO and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member States, who overstepped UNSC Resolution 1973 (2011) and acted as de facto air force for “rebels” aided by several NATO and GCC member States’ special forces, these chemical weapons were repeatedly in danger of falling into hands of terrorist organizations.

Some of Libya’s chemical weapons were, as far as nsnbc could discern, also shipped through Turkey into Syria. The remaining stockpile has now been shipped off the east coast of Misrata, some 200 kilometers east of the capital Tripoli.

A Libyan official from Misrata said Libya has now become free of chemical weapons and added: “We did not want these weapons in the light of the current security situation and the presence of Daesh in the region”.

The chemicals have been stored in the Al-Jufrah region, about 200 km south of Sirte, where forces loyal to the UN recognized but disputed government have been fighting Islamic State (a.k.a. ISIS, ISIL or Daesh) affiliates since May.
