Regular dental x-rays raise tumor risk

The tumors which account for about one in five primary brain tumors affect only two or three in every 100,000 people. Although meningioma tumors grow slowly and are often symptomless, they can lead to disability or life-threatening conditions.

Researchers of Yale, Harvard and other institutions looked at self-reported dental histories of 1,433 patients with meningioma tumors and compared them with data obtained from 1,350 tumor free individuals.

According to the findings published in the journal Cancer, having dental X-rays can double or triple the risk of meningioma.

“The study presents an ideal opportunity in public health to increase awareness regarding the optimal use of dental x-rays, which unlike many risk factors is modifiable,” said lead author Dr. Elizabeth Claus of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and the Yale School of Public Health.

“Our take home message is don’t panic. Don’t stop going to the dentist,” added Dr. Claus highlighting that although the risk is very small, people should consult with their dentist and use X-rays as little as possible.
