“Not only has the presence [of the forces] of the US and certain European countries in Afghanistan under the pretext of fighting terrorism not reduced the terrorist activities in the region, but it has also increased the volume of narcotics production in this country,” Boroujerdi said in a meeting with Director General for Political Affairs at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kare Ass on Sunday.
Boroujerdi described strengthening peace in the region as one of the principle policies of the Islamic Republic and said, “Establishing sustainable peace and security in the region will only be achieved through the collective cooperation of the regional countries.”
The chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee said foreign states must respect the decision of the people in the region and help establish peace by not interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.
The US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rage across the war-battered country despite the presence of about 130,000 foreign forces.
Hundreds of civilians have lost their lives in the US-led operations in various parts of Afghanistan over the past few months as the nation is becoming increasingly outraged at the seemingly endless number of the deadly assaults.
