Former guerilla Niromi de Soyza has slammed the current refugee debate in Australia, saying it’s become a soap opera cross between “The Bold and The Beautiful and Game of Thrones”.
Ms de Soyza (a nom de plume) gained asylum in Australia about 20 years ago, having spent part of her youth fighting in the jungles of Sri Lanka for the militant separatist group, the Tamil Tigers.
She’s written a book about her experience, Tamil Tigress, which includes an account of her fleeing to Australia by aircraft and gaining refugee status.
But Ms de Soyza believes she wouldn’t have got asylum if she arrived in Australia today, saying the current refugee political debate has sunk to new lows.
“Only last week we watched the circus that went on in Parliament House … and I had the privilege of watching it from the ABC24 newsroom,” Ms de Soyza said.
“This soap opera, which I think is the Bold and The Beautiful and Game of Thrones combined together, it’s terrible.”
For non-television fans, the Bold and The Beautiful is a low-brow daytime soap, while Game of Thrones is a medieval fantasy drama produced by US network HBO.
Ms de Soyza was speaking at a small meeting of refugee activists in Sydney on Monday night.
Attendees were specifically discussing the number of asylum seekers that they say are being held in detention centres indefinitely after failing security tests.
Lawyer Stephen Blanks said he believes at least six children are being held at Sydney’s Villawood immigration detention centre indefinitely.
Mr Blanks has previously acted on behalf of a number of asylum seekers who’ve had negative security assessments from the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO).
“We’re in the position now where the politicians know they’ve got to do something but they’re still too afraid,” he told the meeting.
Meanwhile, Fairfax reported on Monday that the number of Sri Lankan asylum seekers reaching Australia by boat has increased dramatically during the last three weeks.
Most are said to be Tamils, an ethnic minority concentrated in the north of the country.
