The Syrian Armed Forces Chief of the General Staff said that a refugee center was destroyed in a terrorist mortar attack on the outskirts of Homs.

The number of casualties is unknown yet, Lt. General Ali Abdullah Ayyoub said Wednesday.

According to him, the Ahrar ash-Sham terrorist group carried out the attack.

“A refugee center was destroyed during the intense mortar fire carried out by Ahrar ash-Sham terrorist group’s militants on the Ter Maela suburb on the outskirts of Homs. There are casualties, but their number is yet to be confirmed. At least 6 home-made high-explosive mines fired from mortars were registered,” the senior Syrian military commander said.

Earlier in October, the leader of the Ahrar ash-Sham, Chechen-born Abu Bakr al-Shishani, was reportedly killed by a Russian airstrike in the Syrian province of Homs.

Ahrar ash-Sham is the second largest terrorist group within the Jaish al-Fatah movement after the Nusra Front (Jabhat al-Nusra). In the spring of 2015, it was one of the militant groups which took over Ariha, Idlib, and Jisr al-Shughur in Syria’s northwest, carrying out mass executions of locals.
