In the first week of his stay, he saw 174 casualties brought in and 6 were already dead. Surgeons performed 23 amputations. The hospital uses more blood products than all of Scotland.

Dr de Rond’s previous research has also seen him study teamwork under extreme conditions.

He said at Camp Bastion he saw the best teamwork he had ever witnessed, but the surgeons were highly competitive.

“These are driven people, and some of the qualities that make them brilliant also make them difficult. The surgeons will occasionally compete for interesting work, and interfere with the work of others when they have none of their own.” Dark humour acted as one of the most important safety valves for the staff, he said.
