Random turn in spate of shootings

A woman had a narrow escape after a bullet penetrated her home on Tuesday, in what police believe was the first indiscriminate attack during the recent spate of Sydney shootings.

Police say the bullet struck the side of a two-storey house in Bennelong St, Granville, late on Tuesday morning.

A 67-year-old woman at home did not notice until she went to an upstairs bathroom about five hours later and found a broken tile in the shower and a bullet on the floor.

People in the neighbourhood heard something sounding like a gunshot about 11.30am (AEDT).

The angle of the bullet indicates that it penetrated the house on the way down, suggesting it may have been randomly shot in the air.

South West Metropolitan Regional Commander Frank Mennilli told reporters on Wednesday that the shot had been fired from some distance and had probably been “indiscriminate and reckless”. Someone could easily have been killed or injured, he said.

There have been 22 shooting incidents in western Sydney in 2012, prompting police to launch Operation Spartan in mid-January.

The crackdown has resulted in 112 arrests and 228 charges in the area stemming from search warrants, vehicle stops and arrests for breach of bail.

Ten of those people have been charged directly over the shootings.

The latest arrest came on Wednesday morning, when police stopped a 34-year-old man at Sydney Airport’s domestic terminal.

Booked on an interstate flight, he was apprehended and charged over a shooting at his Yagoona townhouse.

Police went to the Alan St home about 8.15am (AEDT) on January 13 after neighbours reported shots being fired earlier that morning.

Officers found five bullet casings in the street and three bullet holes in the front window of the townhouse.

A female occupant refused entry to police, and when they returned later with a crime scene warrant no-one was home.

After forcing their way in, they noticed some suspicious items and immediately obtained a search warrant for the premises.

Officers allegedly seized a gun, ammunition, stolen motorcycles and equipment, and instructions on manufacturing drugs.

The man arrested at the airport on Wednesday, who was an occupant of the townhouse, was charged with 11 offences relating to the items seized at the property.

He declined a police interview before police refused him bail.

The man will appear in Sydney’s Central Local Court on Thursday.

Police say the man is well known to them but is not a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang.

The incident was not related to other shootings in the area, police say.

Premier Barry O’Farrell announced new laws this week to increase jail terms for people who fire at a dwelling as part of organised criminal activity.

People found guilty of directing criminal groups will also face longer jail sentences.

Mr O’Farrell has also introduced new anti-gang laws into parliament – more than six months after 2009 laws were struck down by the High Court following a challenge by the Hells Angels.

The legislation will fix a loophole in the Crimes (Criminal Organisations Control) Act 2009, which gives police the power to apply to the Supreme Court to have a gang outlawed.
