Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Friday said comment about today’s revelation concerning the Internal Revenue Service targeting conservative organizations during the 2012 campaign.

“Government should never be used to bully people.”

At a press conference in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Friday, Paul was asked about the issue.

“I’m offended when any kind of government entity targets people for their political or religious beliefs,” he answered. “It’s particularly offensive particularly since I’m one of the groups they were targeting. They didn’t audit me personally, but government should never be used to bully people.”

Paul was then asked if he accepts the explanation that this behavior didn’t come from the top of the agency but from lower-ranking officials.

“I haven’t seen the investigation or the report,” Paul responded, “but I would think that you go until you can’t go beyond a level to find out where the orders came from.”

The Senator was then asked if there’s anything Congress should do concerning this matter.

“My opinion probably won’t be too much listened to in the Senate,” he said, “but in the House side, they have the ability to investigate it, and that’s where a lot of the investigations have occurred when Republicans have felt it was government that was misused or that there needs to be oversight. I don’t know the details enough of this to know whether or not it ends where it ends or whether or not there’s something that still needs to be looked into.”
