Railway workers stage strike in Madrid

The strike was held during the rush hour on Friday and lasted three hours, the Press TV correspondent in Madrid reported.

The strikers say the RENFE railway company has failed to comply with a staffing agreement reached with unions in 2011.

RENFE operates freight and passenger trains on the networks of the Spanish national railway infrastructure company ADIF.

The workers have announced plans to stage strikes every Friday and Sunday until the authorities address their demands for extra staff.

Juan Carlos Cabello, a member of the Comisiones Obreras union in Madrid, said RENFE is being “badly managed” and is “taking funds away from where they should be — that is from the consumer and those who travel.”

For instance, Madrid’s Atocha railway station “does not have the funds it should have,” Cabello noted.

“We want the company (RENFE) to hire new workers,” he added.
