Video: Five-year-old falls from moving train

Queensland Rail has moved to reassure customers it is safe to travel on its long-distance trains after a five-year-old boy fell from an open carriage in the state’s far north.
The boy was released from hospital on Thursday afternoon after suffering minor injuries when he fell from the Cairns-bound Sunlander train shortly before 7:00pm (AEST) on Wednesday.
The boy’s mother raised the alarm with staff on the train when she noticed one of her four children was missing.
He had fallen through an open carriage door and a passing motorist found him about two hours later wandering beside the track near the Bruce Highway.
Queensland Rail spokeswoman Cathy Heffernan says the Sunlander train was travelling at between 25kph and 30kph at the time the boy fell.
She says the carriage he fell from has been removed from service.
“It is such a unique situation that has happened last night,” she said.
“In my 20 years of Queensland Rail I’ve never heard of this type of incident of a child falling out of a door of one of our long-distance trains.
“It’s absolutely critical that we do do that thorough investigation, which we are, and find out what has actually happened in this situation.”
Regular check
Ms Heffernan says staff will continue to regularly check that carriage doors are secure.
“Keeping aware of where your children are is of importance,” she said.
“We have staff that walk through the train and to check on the safety of our customers to check that the doors are closed.”
She says Queensland Rail staff have been comforting the boy’s family.
“We have had our staff in regular contact with the mother, checking in on the boy, on his welfare and also checking in on the mother and her welfare as well because obviously it was a serious incident. She was very upset,” she said.
“We had someone sitting with her whilst he was missing and got her to the Cairns Hospital as soon as we arrived in Gordonvale.”
Meanwhile, passengers at Cairns railway station said they were not surprised the accident occurred.
One person said the doors were open with no locks on them.
The Sunlander train is set to be replaced in 2014.
