Quetta bombing death toll rises to 8

The bombing occurred in Quetta’s Kuchlak area on Friday at a rally organized by the Awami National Party (ANP), Pakistan’s Dawn News network reported.

Security forces cordoned off the area and the injured were taken to a local hospital.

A police official said the bomb was planted on a bicycle. Two children were among the dead.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but police officials put the blame on Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan militants, who have carried out similar attacks in the past.

Quetta has been rocked by ethnic and sectarian violence over the past few years.

Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when Pakistan joined an alliance with the United States in the so-called war against terrorism.

Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan and thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
