A former high ranking police officer says public confidence will be dented by a major breach in security after a man impersonated a police officer and worked unchallenged.
Last night, the ABC revealed an 18-year-old man obtained a police uniform and worked on several occasions at the watch house in East Perth before being detected.
He had a full police utility belt, complete with handcuffs, police issue baton and holster.
Former deputy police commissioner, Murray Lampard, who is now a professor at Edith Cowan University, says it is unbelievable that someone could breach police security at the watch house.
“Police would certainly be very embarrassed about this breach of security,” he said.
“It’s something that they need to look at very seriously and certainly fix immediately, but it’s a very serious matter for public confidence.”
The State Opposition says the revelations are extraordinary.
Labor’s police spokeswoman Michelle Roberts says questions need to be answered immediately.
“This is truly frightening and it points to a major systems breakdown,” she said.
“It’s an incredible breach of security and some questions need to be answered immediately.”
It is not clear if the impersonator had direct contact with prisoners or was able to access police computers while he was in the building.
He has since been charged with several offences.
The Police Union is seeking assurances that no officers’ personal details have been compromised as a result.
The union’s Denis Hayden says he is shocked by the news and concerned about officer safety.
“I believe that they’ve got a right to feel very, very insecure,” he said.
Mr Hayden says the union will seek assurances no officer’s personal details have been compromised.
“If he’s accessed them in anyway I’ve got serious concerns about our own people’s security,” he said.
A spokeswoman for the Police Minister Rob Johnson says while the Minister has been briefed about the investigation, it is inappropriate for him to comment until police do.
WA Police have declined to comment.
