NEW Speaker Peter Slipper has “question marks over him” but is Julia Gillard’s problem, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says.
Mr Abbott has tried to wash his hands of Mr Slipper after the turncoat Coalition MP jumped ship for the Speaker’s chair.
That move gave Labor an extra number on the House of Representatives floor.
But Mr Slipper has dragged Mr Abbott back in after saying the Opposition Leader offered him support in August to find a new seat.
Mr Slipper was unlikely to win preselection for his current seat of Fisher because of deals done by the Liberal National Party in Queensland.
Mr Abbott said he had a very different recollection of discussions, and denied backing Mr Slipper.
He said he was trying to ease Mr Slipper out of the Parliament. “Now the Prime Minister has given him the biggest job in Parliament,” Mr Abbott told 2GB radio.
Mr Abbott was also asked whether he thought Mr Slipper had a problem with alcohol, to which he replied: “I have never myself seen him especially drunk.”
Senior Labor minister Anthony Albanese said it was not surprising that Mr Slipper had jumped ship.
