Queenslanders to vote in council poll

Queenslanders will return to the polls on Saturday for local government elections and, for some, a state by-election.

The council poll comes five weeks after the state government election which delivered a staggering win to the Liberal National Party.

Voters who live in former premier Anna Bligh’s seat of South Brisbane will also be asked to vote for a new state representative.

Ms Bligh narrowly retained her seat but quit politics the day after her party’s defeat, forcing the by-election.

Her successor Jackie Trad must defeat the LNP’s Clem Grehan if Labor are to maintain its meagre seven seats in parliament.

In Brisbane, a recent poll predicts sitting Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will easily defeat Labor challenger Ray Smith.

Seventeen mayors have opted not to recontest the election, the first since the state’s newly amalgamated councils became operational in 2008.

Polling booths are open from 8am to 6pm (AEST).
