WA charities will snag a massive windfall thanks to the Queen’s royal barbecue later this month.
The Activ Foundation, Australian Red Cross, Clontarf Foundation and Legacy will be the beneficiaries of the Big Aussie Barbecue on October 29.
Speaking at the Perth foreshore this morning, Premier Colin Barnett said he expected thousands of West Australians to turn out for the historic event, which will be The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s final public engagement in Perth.
Up to 120 barbecue stalls will line the foreshore, selling 120,000 WA-made sausages and 1500 litres of tomato sauce. About 600 volunteers will make the event possible.
“This is an opportunity for West Australians to be part of a historic event and farewell Her Majesty, The Queen, and His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh,” Mr Barnett said today.
“Up to 120 barbecue stalls will be located throughout The Esplanade and Langley Park with volunteers selling $2 sausage sizzles and drinks from $1.
“All funds raised will be distributed to Activ, the Red Cross, Clontarf and Legacy.”
Mr Barnett said the event was made possible by Bunnings and Coles, which were supplying the barbecues, food and drinks and providing staff to operate each stall.
“About 600 volunteers will be used to help deliver this event – a huge contribution from members of the community,” he said.
The Big Aussie Barbecue runs from 9am to 12.15pm. To maximise viewing opportunities for the public, the Queen will arrive at the event after a slow motorcade procession. Up to 10 screens will be located along the foreshore.
Public transport is free on the Transperth network on Saturday, October 29 and people are urged to take advantage of the service.
