Queen’s Diamond Jubilee: Beacons lit around the world

“Tonight we are reflecting not just the past, on the passing of six
decades. We are reflecting on a life well lived, a life of sacrifice, a life
of service. And to the young people who are here with us this evening, I
hope one thing you’ll always remember about tonight is that example of the
Queen spending her life in the service of others,” Ms Gillard told the
crowd.

As a choir sang the ballad I am Australian, the torch was passed between
students before handed over to Ms Gillard who lit the beacon.

Queen Elizabeth is the head of state in Australia, where her role is hotly
debated between monarchists and republicans.

Ms Gillard is a republican but says that country will not become a republic
until Queen Elizabeth dies; such is the affection for her in Australia.

Queen Elizabeth II is only the second monarch to mark 60 years on the throne,
after her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria reached the milestone in
1897.
