Qld teachers rally after conditions cut

Hundreds of Queensland teachers have rallied outside Parliament House after the state government allegedly cut their conditions without any warning.

The Queensland Teachers Union (QTU) organised the Tuesday afternoon rally to protest at state government plans to remove their conditions in return for a pay rise.

But, at midday the government issued a directive that effectively cut 20 years of accumulated conditions, QTU president Kevin Bates told AAP.

All awards and provisions in relation to permanent employment and privatisation were rendered null and void, Mr Bates said.

“With the stroke of a pen Campbell Newman has made it clear to Queensland students and teachers that this government is far from finished with the educators,” he said.

“There used to be consultation and feedback but not any more.

“There’s no trust, absolutely no trust, in this government.”

About 500 people rallied against the directive, carrying signs that said `Can’t do’ and `Our Kids Count’.

Green and blue QTU banners rose and fell with their cheers.

They snarled when Mr Bates reminded them of Mr Newman’s election promise to make them the best paid teachers in Australia.

“For the government it is about pay, pay, pay,” he told the crowd.

“For us it’s about conditions.”

The United Voice union said the directive overrode enterprise bargaining agreements across the public sector and school cleaners, health professionals and thousands of other Queenslanders faced the axe if services were contracted out.

There are now over 6500 confirmed job losses in the Queensland public sector with another 13,500 predicted.
