Qld police dog punched and kicked

A police dog has been punched and kicked while chasing two alleged thieves in Queensland’s south.

Ribot and his handler were called to Cay Street in Toowoomba, 125 kilometres west of Brisbane, at about 1am (AEST) on Sunday following reports tools had been stolen from a car.

A police spokesman said two Toowoomba males, aged 16 and 17, are suspected of being involved and they were located a short time later nearby on Gordon Street.

The 16-year-old ignored police orders to stop and ran off.

“It will be alleged the male kicked out at PD (Police Dog) Ribot, striking him repeatedly in the head while climbing a fence,” the spokesman said in a statement.

Ribot and his handler tracked him to the backyard of a property in Avondale Street, where he was found hiding in thick undergrowth.

“It will be alleged the male punched the police dog several more times about the head before being detained,” police said.

He was transported to Toowoomba Base Hospital for treatment.

His co-accused has been charged with unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and will appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on May 9.

Ribot suffered bruising to his muzzle area and is being monitored.
