Qld govt looks at public housing overhaul

A shake-up of Queensland’s public housing system won’t see tenants kicked out of their homes, the state government says.

Housing Minister Bruce Flegg says more than 8700 of the state’s public houses are “underoccupied,” while more than 31,000 families languish on the waiting list.

He has sent letters and a feedback form to tenants about a proposal for people living in homes with more bedrooms than they need to move to smaller dwellings or for them to volunteer to share their home with others.

The letter says individual housing needs will be considered if tenants decide to downsize.

A petition against the proposal has started in the southwest Brisbane suburb of Inala, where a large number of public housing tenants live.

The Tenants’ Union of Queensland says many elderly tenants are scared they’ll be forced to leave homes they have spent money and time upgrading.

Tenants are also nervous about sharing their homes with complete strangers.

But Dr Flegg says there is no need for alarm.

“There has been no suggestion to force people to share a house, but there are people who want to participate on a voluntary basis,” Dr Flegg told AAP.

“It’s one of a number of suggestions we’ve put out for feedback.”

He accused Labor of leaving public housing in a “mess” without the money to build more homes.

However, the minister says he’s negotiating with some big community housing organisations to build more homes for the vulnerable.

Opposition leader Annastacia Palasazczuk says building one- and two-bedroom apartments should be the priority.

Connie Dailey, 71, who has been in public housing for 50 years and currently lives alone in a two-bedroom house in Inala, says she could not downsize because of a heart condition that requires a carer to live with her at times.

“They want this for a family,” she said.

“I was prepared to give it to them, but I want a two-bedroom unit and they can’t give it.”

The government has already announced a crackdown on rent dodgers in public housing. Tenants will have until July 27 to notify the Department of Housing of any undeclared household members.
