The Queensland government will look at scaling down a Gold Coast desalination plant that ensured Brisbane had safe drinking water during the 2011 floods.
Water Supply Minister Mark McArdle says he’s looking at all options on the future of the Tugun plant, which he says is costing taxpayers dearly.
“It doesn’t operate to its full capacity and keeping it idle is costing millions. The operating costs of the plant this financial year to the end of April has been $14.2 million,” he said.
Mr McArdle said the Gold Coast City council planned for a 50 megalitre a day desalination plant to counter drought-related water supply shortages.
But that was almost tripled to 125 megalitres a day by the Beattie government.
Mr McArdle acknowledged the role the plant played servicing Brisbane during the January 2011 floods.
But he added: “I understand however that the supply could have done so with its original 50 megalitre capacity.”
